Critical Investigation Tutorial - 5th October

  • ·      Your choice of text and topic is important – as we’ve discussed previously, both the text and the issue are pretty well-trodden paths and therefore we need to make our research is absolutely outstanding. The positive is that you should be able to write with clarity as the negative representation of women is a topic that can written about with passion and anger. This needs to be a feminist polemic!
  •        This should manifest itself in your angle and hypothesis – and the best investigations keep it really simple. Do Hollywood movies have a negative impact on audiences in terms of gender roles and expectations?
  •        Your research plan is going to be crucial – this is what will get you the A grade. You’ll want to research a huge number of feminist film studies theorists – Butler, McRobbie, Van Zoonen, bell hooks will all be new to you plus Year 12 theories such as male gaze (Mulvey etc.) There are also some great books for this topic already in DF07. Not to mention the BFI trip too!
  •         Linked production – documentary/Newsnight-style production regarding feminism. This is tough but certainly possible. Production values need to be sky-high so think about how you can make this work and we’ll return to it in January.
  • Next steps: finish project proposal and start building a comprehensive research plan
After this tutorial, my next steps are to finish off my project proposal and begin building a extensive research plan. My research will consist of information from a variety of sources such as academic text books, documentaries and more which needs to be of an exceptional standard to achieve the best possible grade, as my text and topic are so mainstream. One book that has already taken my interest from the tutorial is already in DF07, I believe it is called 'Feminism in the media', which I will definitely use to gather research. As part of my research plan, I will also be watching a documentary that I found called ' Miss representation', which is about giving woman a more prominent role within the media.
